Charybdis is a massive, tube-like sea monster who lives on one side of a narrow channel of water, on the opposite side of Scylla, another man-eating sea monster.
Biography[]
Charybdis appeared before Odysseus to block his way home to Ithaca. The two faced off in a battle of endurance, with Charybdis opening her mouth, creating a massive whirlpool, and Odysseus knocking off pieces of his raft so Charybdis swallowed them and choked on the logs. Eventually, Charybdis faltered and spat out Odysseus' raft.
Trivia[]
- For those curious, the most common pronunciation of the creature's name has been 'Kuh-rib-duss'.
- Charybdis is the only character in EPIC to have no lines and serve no major purpose in the plot.
- While it was never mentioned in the musical, Charybdis is Poseidon and Gaia's daughter in Greek mythology. In one version of her story, she is a beautiful but voracious giantess, while in the other she was always an aquatic entity. In both versions she is punished by Zeus, either for stealing land in her father's name or for stealing oxygen from Heracles; as a result, she ends up in her more monstrous form.
- This may be why her song ends with the beginning of Odysseus' final confrontation with Poseidon.
- In some versions of Charybdis' myths, she is the mother of Scylla.[1]
