No I’m not a player, I’m a puppeteer! No, I don’t play, I puppeteer, yeah!
-Circe ("Puppeteer")
Circe is a sorceress and minor goddess. She inhabits the island of Aeaea with her loyal nymphs, using her magic to protect them from intruders. She serves as the main antagonist of The Circe Saga.
Act 1[]
Trivia[]
- Homer described Circe as a goddess with "human speech", and during her saga in the musical this is indirectly referenced: Eurylochus said her voice showed no malice, and the sorceress herself doesn't use an obvious ENSEMBLE like other gods when they sing (the lack of a striking chorus showing that her voice is human-like).
- Although Circe's paternity isn't explicitly mentioned in the musical, the official animatic of her second song shows her carrying a solar disk in her belt, a reference to Helios, her father. According to the most accepted version, the sea nymph Perseis would be her mother, Pasiphaë, Aeëtes, and Perses would be her siblings, and she would have many half-siblings due to her father's many affairs.
- According to Greek mythology, it was Circe who transformed Scylla (a monster Odysseus meets later on his journey) by putting one of her potions in a pool where the nymph bathed, jealous of her because she was the beloved of Glaucus, a sea god the sorceress loved herself. This is vaguely referenced in There Are Other Ways, when Circe tells Odysseus that she has been in love once before.
- Jorge Rivera-Herrans has confirmed this to be canon within his musical, and even revealed a musical connection between both characters and the sagas in which they are featured.[1]
- In the Telegony, a story about the son Circe had with Odysseus, the which ends up receiving Penelope and Telemachus in her island, and married the latter.
