Welcome to the list of early drafts and deleted songs from EPIC: The Musical. Older lyrics and songs that were never fully formed can be found here in chronological order. Some of the deleted songs may still be released by Jay in a mini album. Find the lyrics and links to the original clips below.

Many clips of these cut songs are available via Jorge Rivera-Herrans' patreon. Youtuber TooAwkard then publicly shared a number of these clips in the video "The Songs that Weren't EPIC" confirming in a pinned comment that he received permission to do so.[1]

Deleted Songs[]

Pick Me[]

Pick Me was created by Jorge Rivera-Herrans to show the story of how Menelaus and Helen met and how Odysseus chose Penelope to be his wife. It begins with Helen’s father introducing her and Menelaus tells Odysseus how he needs Helen. Then there is a shift where Penelope and Helen playfully argue over Helen’s suitors when Odysseus asks Penelope to let him through so he can put in a good word for Menelaus. Helen picks Odysseus after he makes the men swear an oath to support and protect her husband but he insists Menelaus is better and he wants Penelope.

To Be Mine[]

To Be Mine was created by Jorge Rivera-Herrans in 2020, featuring a "cute origin moment" between Odysseus and Penelope, touching on their first meeting, engagement, and Athena finding herself as Odysseus's de facto wingman. It was cut for not fitting with the rest of EPIC, in part due to Odysseus's narration.[2]

[Odysseus]
Penelope is her name
She's the smartest girl in the game
and 17 was the age that I knew that we'd be engaged.
She was out of my league,
and out of this world,
but I couldn't seem to get over this girl,
so I asked for help from the one I trusted the most

[Athena, spoken]
You have got to be kidding me.

[Odysseus]
Athena!
You gotta help me meet the
girl of my dreams
I've seen her
And I need her to be mine!
Believe it!
I'm in love and I mean it!
Her name's Penelope and I need her to be mine!

Ismarus[]

Ismarus[3] was a deleted song that took place between Full Speed Ahead and Your Light. It was later combined with Full Speed Ahead, which was given Ismarus' intended purpose as an introduction to EPIC's protagonists. Lines from the end of the song show up in The Underworld and briefly in Love In Paradise.[4][5] The plot of this song follows Odysseus and his men after Full Speed Ahead, having arrived on Ismarus, a city of the Cicones, and where they keep their food stored. During the song, Odysseus, Eurylochus, and Polites come up with varying ideas for if they should raid Ismarus to mend their food shortage, with Athena narrating the song. Eurylochus suggests to Odysseus that, as the winners of the Trojan War, they do not need to worry about permission, and should sack Ismarus how they see fit. Polites disagrees and suggests they should not raid Ismarus, and instead search for another place to get food. Odysseus decides that his men WILL raid Ismarus, but will not kill anyone in the town, which Eurylochus objects to, but is quickly shut down. The song ends with Odysseus and Polites alone together some unknown stretch of time after the rest of the song. Polites asks Odysseus what has been keeping awake at night, which, in response, Odysseus reveals his struggles with grief and nightmares of his fallen men after the Trojan War.

[ATHENA]
Low on provisions, low on supplies
600 guys sail North towards the port of Ismarus

[POLITES]
Isn't this...

[SOLDIERS]
...The land of the Cicones?

[ODYSSEUS]
Yes

[ATHENA]
Weakened and feeble from fighting the war
The Cicones keep their food in store in Ismarus

[ODYSSEUS]
Alright, listen up

[ATHENA]
The captain and his men devise a plan

[CREW]
Yes sir!

[ODYSSEUS]
We're currently fighting against the current
We're low on nourishment and it's impossible to flourish
We are low on food, low on supply, need to feed 600 guys
Need to beat this fleeting time with speed and resources in mind
Fellow brethren together we need a plan
Do we raid the nearest city or leave and take a chance?
Whoever wishes to speak please take a stand

[CREW]
Eurylochus

[ATHENA]
Eurylochus, his second in command

[EURYLOCHUS]
Captain, Why not take the poor by the jugular and hit them where it hurts now
Captain, victors of the war, we don't have to ask permission or for trust now
Raid that city, sack that town
Where was their pity when they struck our men down?
Captain, tell me did we come this far so we could all starve now

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
If we don't get that food our lives are lost

[ATHENA, spoken]
If you take a life to save a life does it justify the cost?

[POLITES, spoken]
Wait! There must be another way

[CREW]
Polites

[ATHENA, spoken]
Polites, the captain's best friend

[POLITES]
Why don't we leave the bloodshed for another day?
The war is over; let's do no harm
Let's find a place with open arms
Get what we need, we'll play it safe and make it home

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
Even if we found another place, we might have these same problems

[ATHENA, spoken]
Assuming you live long enough to solve them

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
Eurylochus?

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
Captain?

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
Rally half the troops; you'll invade the city of Ismarus tonight

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
Yes, captain

[ODYSSEUR, spoken]
Eurylochus?

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
Captain?

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
Our men are not to use any lethal force in this fight

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
Sir wait, let me get this straight
You want no lethal force in a city wide raid?

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
That's correct

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
But sir, what exactly do you expect?

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
No lethal force, don't kill,
What about that doesn't connect?

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
There's a reason I object, forgive me sir but that's preposterous,
The second we attack there are bound to be some deadly consequence-

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
I don't care! I gave an order, enough said
The war was full of gore; no more of this bloodshed
Just steal what we need and then retreat

[CREW]
Polites, Polites

[POLITES]
What keeps you up so late at night my friend?

[ODYSSEUS]
All I hear are screams
Every time I dare to close my eyes
I no longer dream
Only nightmare of those who've died
Nothing's what it seems!

[POLITES]
Nothing's what it seems!
Not every choice is black and white

[ODYSSEUS]
I keep thinking of the infant from that night...
I keep thinking of the infant from that night...

[POLITES]
Hey

Trivia[]

  • Before the final released demo of the song, an earlier draft of the song was written that was 6 minutes in length. The main known difference between the versions is that this version would've also featured and introduced Elpenor and Perimedes before their removal from EPIC's main cast. It's also said that this version of the song was, in Jorge's words, a ripoff of Aaron Burr, Sir from the musical Hamilton.[6][7]
    • The only lyrics we currently have of this version of the song are presumably ones from a Tiktok where Jorge plays a small clip of Ismarus, using this version instead of the final demo. The verse used is of Perimedes announcing his plan to sneak 10 men into Ismarus before the sun rises, accompanied by a chant of his name from the rest of the crew. [8]
    • While Perimedes and Elpenor are no longer major characters in the final draft, they makes cameos in Storm and Keep Your Friends Close, where they are voiced by Ayron Alexander and Luke Holt, the voices of Antinous and Zeus respectively. Perimedes also appears in Mutiny, being the crewmate to stabbed Odysseus in the back when he was about to kill Eurylochus.
  • Ismarus was cut from EPIC for multiple reasons. The song being mostly rap, it having Athena as a narrator, it's structure being "tell don't show", and Jorge disliking the song. [9]
    • Jorge has also said that he felt the Lotus Eater's island being in place of Ismarus would make for more variety in the show after displaying a human war in The Horse and The Infant. This was the reason that the Lotus Eaters entirely replaced Ismarus as a plot point, and Ismarus was retconned out of the story. [10] [11]

Your Light[]

Your Light[12][13] was a deleted song that took place between Ismarus and Warrior of The Mind. It was later replaced with Open Arms to create a song more connected to the saga's plot. The plot of this song follows Polites attempting to comfort and cheer up Odysseus shortly after the events of Ismarus. At a point in the song, Polites and Odysseus begin to reminisce on their youth, and when they would go through the forest looking for the largest threat they could find. The two mention their encounter with Athena's magical boar, and how Polites was paralyzed in fear as the boar rushed at him, only saved by Odysseus jumping in to take the blow for Polites. The song ends with the two in a duet about how they want to be each other's guide and comfort, with Odysseus calmed down.

[POLITES]
Oh, I know the world's not always pretty
and there are days that seem to last for way too long
Oh, I know that the world can get real lonely
and there are times you feel too hopeless to go on

But hey there bro, don't you know?
Look deep inside and there you go!
Hanging in your heart, I'm always there!
and hey there bro, can't you see?
No matter what, you still got me!
So when you need a friend or when you're scared

Just let me be your light!
Let me be the stars you see at night!
Let me be the arms that hold you tight!
When life gets hard or when you're lost in the dark
Let me be your Light!
Let me be your Light!
Let me be your Light!

[POLITES, spoken]
Aw come on!
Why are you so serious all the time?
"Hey, look at me, I'm the captain! Alright, listen up!"

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
What?

[POLITES, spoken]
That's what you sound like!

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
I don't sound like that!

[POLITES, spoken]
Sure…

[POLITES]
Do you remember when we would run through the forest
looking for the largest threat?
Well you would run I would follow

[ODYSSEUS]
Oh, I remember the thrill and the fun!

[POLITES]
Until the day we found that giant boar's den!

[ODYSSEUS]
That was terrifying!

[POLITES]
We were rather young! And I was oh so scared!
I saw him lunge and I stared!

[ODYSSEUS]
You tried to move, but your muscles wouldn't give!

[POLITES]
but the you jumped right in his way!
You forced the boar down and saved the day!

[ODYSSEUS]
I only took the blow so you could live!

[POLITES]
Whoa! and hey there friend, don't forget
that even when the sun has set hanging in your heart
I'm always there!
And hey there friend, can't you see?
No matter what, it's you and me!
So when you need a hand or when you're scared

[POLITES, ODYSSEUS, BOTH]
Just let me be your light!
Let me be the stars you see at night!
Let me be the arms that hold you tight!
When life gets hard or when you're lost in the dark

Let me be your light! (Light!)
Let me be your light!
Let me be your light!
Let me be your light!
Let me be your light!
Let me be your light!
Light!
Light!

[POLITES]
Let me be your light!

Trivia[]

  • Your Light was written before EPIC began production, originally intended by Jorge as a song for his crush. It was then repurposed for EPIC due to him finding it catchy. [14]
  • Before the final demo of Your Light, there was another draft of Your Light known to exist. One was set before Odysseus being sent to war, and would've been in some way related to him with baby Telemachus. Nothing else is known about this draft. It could be presumed that this version was written for the very first draft of EPIC, back when the first act was The Iliad, while the second was The Odyssey. [15]
  • At some point in EPIC being written, presumably while Your Light was set before the war, there was meant to be a reprise of the song. It seemed to also take place before the war, and followed Odysseus and Penelope lamenting his draft to war while sitting on their bed. Nothing else is known about this draft. [16]
  • Your Light was cut from EPIC due to being extremely off topic to the rest of the songs in the saga and halting the plot, alongside portraying Polites in an inaccurate way to the final character. [17] [18][19]
  • A line from “Your Light” has Polities ask Odysseus if he could ‘be his light’. In “We’ll Be Fine”, Athena sings ‘Then his light went dark’. This could be referencing that Polities was Odysseus’s light, and might have been written back when “Your Light” was planned to appear in the musical.

Comfort Zone[]

Comfort Zone was a cut song from EPIC, meant to take place some time after Ismarus. (as the crew has lost 72 men, and in the Odyssey the raid on Ismarus results in the loss of 6 men for each one of the 12 ships). A single verse of the song is reused in Legendary. The plot of this song followed a conversation between a drunken Elpenor and Perimedes after the raiding of Ismarus. Perimedes vents his frustration of Odysseus going soft, and when Elpenor mentions Odysseus killing Astynax, Perimedes counters this by saying he would do it too. When Elpenor questions this, Perimedes goes off on how he doesn't love anyone, and that he keeps people away from himself to stop them from potentially hurting him. Polites overhears their conversation and intervenes, telling the two they'll be joining him for recon. [20]

[CREW]
528 men under his command!
528 men under his command!
528 men under his command!
528- Perimedes!

[PERIMEDES]
Yo!
Captain's gone soft!
72 of our dudes are now lost

[ELPENOR]
He hasn't been the same since Troy
I heard he had to kill an evil baby boy!

[PERIMEDES]
Oh please!
Gimme that baby and I'd yeet it off a tower

[ELPENOR]
What?

[PERIMEDES]
I don't love anybody, that's my power
Cause if I've got nothing to lose,
Then I've got nothing to fear!
And there's no way I'll get bruised
If I don't let anyone near!
Cause it's me myself and I!
Can't fall if I don't fly!
Can't fail if I don't try!
I'm in my comfort zone!
I'm in my comfort zone!

[ELPENOR]
Polites!

[PERIMEDES]
How long were you listening?

[POLITES]
Long enough to know you won't miss a thing
We stopping here tonight
And you and me are making sure that it's clear tonight
We're doing recon

[PERIMEDES]
Wait what are you bringing me for?

The World Was a Better Place[]

The World Was a Better Place[21]was sung by an unknown character, likely Perimedes, on the Island of the Lotus Eaters. This song's melody would later be used in The Challenge.

[UNKNOWN]
No one would bat an eye
It was all so fast!

Cope With That[]

Cope With That is a song that portrays a debate between Odysseus and Elpenor about whether they should leave Perimedes, who is experiencing a rare feeling of bliss after eating a Lotus, on the Lotus Eaters' island. This song's melody would later be used in Monster.[22]

[ELPENOR]
Maybe we should leave him

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
What?

[ELPENOR]
Look at how he sleeps
Look at how he's smiling
It's the first real one in weeks

You don't know him like I do
which is why you'd be perplexed
If you knew how he would hide the truth
that deep down he was depressed

[ATHENA, spoken]
Don't let him convince the other men.

[ODYSSEUS]
So what? Are we supposed to abandon
those who are hurting? Desert them?
Leave 'em out to burn when
words are not working?

[ELPENOR]
No, we support them
however they need
We let them be happy and free

[ODYSSEUS]
It's not my job to make him happy
It's my job to bring him home

[ELPENOR]
How do you know he hasn't found it?
We shouldn't make him have to go

[ODYSSEUS, CREW]
Well, maybe I'm a monster
Maybe I'm in the wrong
Maybe I'm the problem
that's been hiding all along
I'm a slave to my ambition
A prisoner to my drive
And I have got this mission
and I cannot compromise
And you'll just have to cope with that

Man Of The House[]

Man Of The House is a song that sheds light on Odysseus' backstory. Despite being cut, its inspiration does show up in some of the lyrics that are sung in Legendary, The Challenge. and Odysseus. [23][24] This song was also originally a Eurylochus song.[25]

[YOUNG ODYSSEUS, LAERTES]
When I turned nine, my dad pulled me aside and said
son I'm going insane.
I'm losing my mind, don't have too much time and
soon you'll take over my reign
Your cunningness will make you tough
cause bravery is not enough.

I could tell his time was getting shorter
his voice was getting weaker
He could barely speak!
And all I could think was...

Where is he?
Where is the man who was larger than life?
Where is he?
Where is the man who was sharp as a knife?

Cause in my darkest days the pain was our drive
Time is fleeting, it's running out!
Time to be the man of the house!

[ODYSSEUS]
At the age of thirteen, I became the third king
of Ithaca and did it with pride.
The years passed by and it clearly was time for me
to find a faithful bride.
Everybody wanted Helen of Sparta
I wanted someone smarter.
Part of her family tree was the girl for me!
A girl I would give the world to see!

[ENSEMBLE]
Penelope!

[ODYSSEUS]
She made every heart in our vicinity soar! Felt like infinity roars!
She was the first thing I had an affinity for!
She's what I saved my virginity for!
Oh! She was the cleverest girl I'd ever seen!
Articulate, serene, the wittiness of my dreams!
I wanted to scream!

[ODYSSEUS, PENELOPE]
And long before we had a chance to meet,
I knew we were thinking the same thing! We were wondering:
Where is he? Where is he?
Where is the man who'll have you to wife?
Where is the man who'll have me to wife?
Where is he? Where is he?
Where is the man with whom you'll spend your life?
Where is the man with whom I'll spend my life?
Cause in my darkest days, Penelope's my drive!
Cause in our darkest days, Penelope's his drive.

Eurylochus’ Version[]

The full version was uploaded to Jorge’s Patreon for June Choice 1/2

Footstep[]

Footstep is a cut song from The Cyclops Saga about the journey to the Polyphemus’s cave[25]

[ODYSSEUS]
I look up in the distance
you couldn't miss this mistake
A pitter in the night

The Cyclops[]

The Cyclops was an early song from The Cyclops Saga that was cut from the final draft of the musical.

[POLYPHEMUS]
You should steer clear of this path
if you think we fear Zeus's wrath!

This is the Way[]

This is the Way is a conversation between Odysseus and Athena, presumably replaced with My Goodbye.[26] A line in it was repurposed for The Horse and the Infant.

[ODYSSEUS]
This cannot be the way

[ATHENA, ODYSSEUS]
Sometimes mercy has a price
Sometimes you gotta be cold as ice
No, this can't be the way

Empathy makes you good
But it does not make you right
Does not make you right

Sometimes mercy disappears
Sometimes you're better off using fear
The world is insincere

This cannot be the way
This is the way

This cannot be the way
This is the way

This cannot be the way
This is the way

This cannot be the way
This is the way

This cannot be the way
The blood on your hands is something you can't lose
All you can choose is whose

[ODYSSEUS]
This cannot be the way

Till We're Home[]

Till We're Home was the original finale of Act 1, which took place at the end of the Circe Saga.[25]

[ODYSSEUS and CREW]
Till we're home we sail!

Appetite[]

Appetite was a deleted song from when Odysseus gets trapped on Calypso's island and pretends to seduce to her. It was a duet between the two.[27][25]

[ODYSSEUS]
Calypso, my darling
I know that my attitude each year has been so jarring
I spend my time mad at you while you've been so charming
Suddenly, my appetite has changed. I'm starving
for more than just a meal tonight so
wait for me precious back where you have dreamt of us
and lay where your bed is.
I'll be just a moment while I go and get ready.
Don't get impatient.
There's no time to spare!
I think love is in the air!

Belong To You[]

Belong To You may have been an early draft or inspiration for Not Sorry For Loving You. It may have also been a follow up to the previous song.[28][29]

[CALYPSO]
Once a day for 7 years I waited here while
you walked along the shoreline.
You said you had to clear your mind in the afternoon
So I assumed you wanted room to be
by the sea for privacy but now I see
you lied to me after everything we've been through
the walks and the late night talks we're into.
Now I know that I don't mean a thing to you.
This is why I don't feel seen by you
even though I stuck around even when your world was falling down!
I have done so much for you.
Why can't you just love me too?

Trick[]

Trick is a song where Odysseus questions if he is truly being set free after 7 years imprisoned on Calypso's island.[26]

[ODYSSEUS]
Is this some kind of trick,
Pretending I can go?
Because, if so, you're sick
My heart's already broken
I'm tired of this
And I've run out of sympathy

In Vain[]

In Vain is an early song about the final confrontation between Odysseus and Poseidon. This song would later be replaced by Get in the Water.[25][30][31][1]

[POSEIDON, spoken]
There you are,
coward

There's an anger that festers
A pain that's worse than death
Take a stranger, make him lesser,
strip away what he has left

That's where I'm at
That's where I've been
I don't know who I'm meant to be
I was a ruthless god, but you took that away from me

For what kind of man can not avenge his pride and son?
What kind of monster gets outsmarted and outrun?!
What kind of god doesn't get to end what he's begun
In vain?
In vain!

Every night,
my son wakes from nightmares submerged in fright!
He dreams of a monster who took his sight,
then cries because his dad failed to
make it right

The Light Inside[]

The Light Inside is a cut song featuring Odysseus and Telemachus. As he and Odysseus prepare to fight the suitors, Telemachus asks his father a question.[26]

[TELEMACHUS]
How do you do it?
How do you cope?
How do you turn off the light inside
And turn your heart cold?

My bow is ready
Arrow is drawn
Even if I were to shoot them now
How would I go on?

Every moment breaks my heart
Every day I'm scared
Even when I'm needed
I don't dare

This resentment brims with pain
Someone tell me why
Instead of strength, I've
Oceans in my eyes

Royal Wisdom Burst[]

Royal Wisdom Burst has had little revealed about itself, but it did feature Telemachus joining his father in the battle against the remaining Suitors before Athena joins as well. This song would later be replaced by I Can't Help But Wonder[32][33], although it seems likely that it was incorporated into the previous song, Odysseus, as the song was described as the battle against the suitors continued, while Song 38 is the battle against the suitors.

[TELEMACHUS]
Get away from him!

[ENSEMBLE]
Te-le-ma-chus
Te-le-ma-chus
Te-le-ma-chus
Te-le-ma-chus

[ATHENA]
Glad to join the party
Though I'm sorry I came late

Olive Tree[]

Olive Tree was originally supposed to be the final song of EPIC, based on how Odysseus and Penelope's wedding bed was built into the roots of their olive tree. This song would later be replaced by Would You Fall in Love With Me Again.[34][35]

[PENELOPE]
Before you take any step closer
Before we let our eyes connect
I'd like to tell a story of my husband
I'd like to pay him one last respect

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
Alright...

[PENELOPE]
Where to begin? How long's it been?
So many years ago, we were just kids
We met in silence here on this island
And I won't forget he'd invite me like this

[YOUNG ODYSSEUS]
When the day sleeps, I'll be waiting by the
Olive tree, all of me wants to be next to you
When the stars shine, then it's our time at the
Olive tree come with me, love

[PENELOPE]
Every night we'd spend our time
Talking for hours we'd watch the sun rise
Oh, I adored him, I'd have died for him
But then the war came and it took him away

[YOUNG ODYSSEUS]
While I'm fighting you can find me in the
Olive tree promise me you know I'll come back to you
When the stars shine, then it's our time at the
Olive tree I will return, Love

[PENELOPE]
And oh, the years passed by
And oh, my tears won't dry
And so I'll move our wedding bed
away from here

[ODYSSEUS, PENELOPE]
Is this a game, love?
I built our wedding bed into that
Olive tree I gave it all of me, all for you
You know that bed can't be moved,
my love! My gods! It really is you...

[ODYSSEUS]
Penelope!
Penelope!

[PENELOPE]
Oh, how I missed you my darling!
My love!

Draft 1 of EPIC[]

When Jorge started working on what would later be titled EPIC in 2019, his first idea was that the first act would follow the plot of The Iliad, while the second would be The Odyssey. Jorge wrote 6 or 7 songs in this time, before eventually scrapping it all and writing a first draft of the first half of The Horse and The Infant. While Jorge claims he started from scratch, the reusage of some of these songs, their themes, and their lyrics later down the line suggest this may be him misremembering or subconsciously reusing parts. [36] [37] This section is not written in chronological order due to the placement of these songs being unknown.

Unhand Him[]

Unhand Him[38] was a cut song of EPIC from the first draft. While mostly abandoned, a single verse was edited and brought back for Mutiny. The plot of this song was set during the raid of Ismarus, as Odysseus finds Eurylochus near The Temple of Apollo, about to kill Maron, a priest of Ismarus, after having already killed his son. Odysseus calls out to Eurylochus to release the man, which Eurylochus retaliates to by claiming he was teaching Maron a lesson because of his now deceased son being armed with a dagger. Odysseus doesn't care, and still demands mercy for him, due to him being a priest. Eurylochus releases Maron, who Odysseus then speaks to, apologizing for what he had done, and saying that Eurylochus will pay for his son's death. Odysseus confronts Eurylochus on his lack of compassion for the people of Ismarus. Eurylochus counters this by claiming him and Odysseus are one and alike, saying that Odysseus can't have none of the power without any blame. When Odysseus attempts to point out the murder of Maron's son, Eurylochus counters this by mentioning Odysseus' murder of Astynax in Troy before walking away. The song ends with Odysseus calling to his men, demanding that 300 of them tend to their boats, while the other 300 defend them.

[ODYSSEUS]
Unhand him right this second
This has gone way too far

[EURYLOCHUS]
I taught this man a lesson
Turns out his son was armed

[ODYSSEUS]
I don't care! This man's a priest
He's not to be harmed

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
You're free to go, sir.
We're sorry for the trouble we've caused.

[MARON THE PRIEST, spoken]
That man, he killed my son...

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
And he will pay for your loss.

[ODYSSEUS]
Have you no compassion?
Have you no concern for those
On the other side?
For the other guy?

You've provoked the allied factions
All because your thirst for blood was so profound
They were already down

[EURYLOCHUS]
Oh, come now
You don't really think we're different
We're one in the same

[ODYSSEUS]
We're not the same

[EURYLOCHUS]
You don't get to have all the power
And none of the blame

[ODYSSEUS]
You're not saving any lives by
Killing an innocent boy

[EURYLOCHUS]
Then what in Olympus' name
Did you do in Troy?
We're one and the same

[SOLDIERS]
Ambush, ambush
Ambush, ambush
Six hundred men (ambush)
Six hundred men (ambush)
Six hundred men (ambush)
Six hundred men (ambush)

[ODYSSEUS]
Three hundred men will tend to the boats
And three hundred men will defend them, go!

Trivia[]

  • In a script of the song, instead of pointing out Eurylochus' thirst for blood, Odysseus originally points out that Eurylochus had learned no lesson from the 10 wasted years spent fighting the Trojan War. [39]

Apollo, Forgive Me[]

Apollo, Forgive Me[40] was a cut song of EPIC from the first draft. It was set right after Unhand Him. The known plot of the song is Odysseus, likely still at the temple of Apollo, attempting to make an apology to Apollo for what he and his men did to Ismarus, and how he wishes to be free of the violence. the known lyrics of the song end with Maron returning to gift Odysseus a bottle made of goatskin containing black wine, the wine of the gods to be exact. Odysseus thanks Maron and ensures Eurylochus will pay for what he did to his family.

[ODYSSEUS]
Apollo, forgive me
For I had never meant to take the lives from the city you protect
Apollo, forgive me
For I would never dare to cross the line that our fighting neglects

For if I could bring some peace to this world
You know I'd try
If I could flee from all these wars
I'd never fight
And yet I seem to leads us towards the strife
Is there any way to escape the call to arms?
Oh, how I long to see the day of open arms
Again

[MARON THE PRIEST]
Excuse me
I wanted to thank you for saving our lives
We may have lost our son but you saved me and my wife
We'll have to make do
This is for you
When you're overwhelmed by the odds
You can drink this wine of the gods

[ODYSSEUS]
Thank you
And don't worry, Eurylochus will pay

I Wanna be a Legend[]

I Wanna be a Legend (presumed title)[41] was a cut song of EPIC from the first draft. While the song's lyrics have never returned to EPIC, Jorge mentioned that the elements of the song were used later, and judging by the lyrics, it could be assumed this is referring to the song being repurposed into Legendary. The plot of this song follows a young Odysseus speaking to Eurycleia, his wet nurse and confidant, about his desires to go down in history.

[YOUNG ODYSSEUS]
I wanna be remembered!
I wanna live forever!
I want the world to know my name
Long after I'm gone!
I wanna be a legend!
I wanna be a myth
cause this is how they won't forget me in the end
I wanna be a legend

God Games (2019 version)[]

The 2019 version of God Games[42] was an early version of the song God Games made for the first draft of EPIC. Before the song was about releasing Odysseus after his time spent on Ogygia, it was a rap battle song about the judgement of Paris from The Iliad. Very little is known about this version of the song besides it featuring Athena, Aphrodite, and Hera. [43]

[Athena]
Yo!
It's the tactical immaculate master of raw strategy
about to wack the aphro off dite for talking smack to me
I diss this goddess so hard
They call it blasphemy

Early Drafts of EPIC Songs[]

The Horse And The Infant[]

The original version of The Horse And The Infant had Lin-Manuel Miranda style rapping during the first half. [44] [45]

[ODYSSEUS, SOLDIERS]
Alright, listen up
Tonight, the Trojans will pay us in blood
The ten years that we spent here will all end here, I've had enough
Think of your homes, think of your sons, think of the glorious men they'll become
Think of your wives all alone in their bed
Do what I say and you'll see them again

Yes sir!

Diomedes will lead the charge

Agamemnon will flank the guards

Meneleus will let our mates through the gates to takе the whole city at large

Tеucer will shoot any ambush attack

And Little Ajax will stay back

Nestor, secure Helen and protect her

Neo, avenge your father, kill the brothers of Hector!

Yes sir!

You must be cunning, you must be nimble
You must come running when I send the signal
You must be daring and brave to save your brothers, live another day
So we can go back from the war we fought
Go back to the life we sought
Attack and take back from the men we kill
This city's gonna be sacked for the blood they spilled and still

I need you to surpass yourselves
and ask yourselves what you love most of all
Cause tonight, we fight
And tonight, Troy falls
So tell me
What do you live for?
What do you die for?
What do you wish for?
What do you fight for?

[SOLDIERS]

What do you live for?

What do you die for?

What do you wish for?

What do you fight for?

[ODYSSEUS, SOLDIERS]

Penelope...

Penelope...

And Telemachus

I fight for us, I fight for us
What do you live for? Penelope

What do you die for? Telemachus

What do you wish for? I'm on my way
What do you fight for? Attack!

Who was that?

[ZEUS]
A vision of what is to come
Cannot be outrun
Can only be dealt with right here and now

[ODYSSEUS]
Tell me how

[ZEUS]
I don't think you're ready
A mission to kill someone's son
A foe who won't run
Unlike anyone you have faced before

[ODYSSEUS]
Say no more, I know that I'm ready

[ZEUS]
I don't think you're ready

[ODYSSEUS]
It's just an infant...
It's just a boy...
What sort of imminent threat does he pose that I can not avoid?

[ZEUS, ENSEMBLE]
This is the son of none other than Troy's very own prince Hector
Know that he will grow from a boy to an avenger
One fueled with rage as you're consumed by age
If you don't end him now you'll have no one left to save
You can say goodbye to
Penelope, you can say goodbye to Penelope

[ODYSSEUS,ZEUS]
I could raise him as my own (He will burn your house and throne)
Or send him far away from home (He'll find you wherever you go)
Make sure his past is never known (The gods will make him know)
I'd rather bleed for ya, down on my knees for ya (He's bringing you down on your knees for ya)
I'm begging please Oh, this is the will of the gods

Please don't make me do this, don't make me do this

[ZEUS]
The blood on your hands is something you won't lose

[ALL]
All you can choose is whose

Just A Man[]

A slightly altered early draft of Just A Man with longer, drawn-out notes that would be more emotional then the final version.[46][44] [47]

[ODYSSEUS, SOLDIERS]
I look into your eyes and I
Think back to the son of mine
You're as old as he was
When I left for war
Will these actions haunt my days?
Every single man I've slain?
Men whose only sin was standing in my way

I'm just a man Just a man...
Who's trying to go home Go home
I long to see my family
I long to see Penelope

I'm just a man... Just a man...
who's fighting for his life... For his life...
who longs to see his wife!
I long to see my family
I long to see Penelope! Penelope...

But when does a comet become a meteor?
When does a candle become a blaze?
When does a man become a monster?
When does a ripple become a tidal wave?
When does the reason become the blame?
When does a man become a monster?

When does a comet become a meteor?
When does a candle become a blaze? Forgive me...
When does a man become a monster?

Full Speed Ahead[]

The original version of Full Speed Ahead, which included a rap style opening reminiscent of Lin-Manuel Miranda's music.[48][49][50]

[ATHENA]
There once was a man!
Cunning mind running through the sky and the sand,
in the land of gods and monsters!
Sought to see his family prosper at any and all costs and
Through the process, he became dauntless.
Now, he's remembered forever for his endeavors
And all he ever lived was the life of a legend...
A life that was Epic

[ODYSSEUS]
Six hundred men
Six hundred men under my command
With only one goal in mind

[SOLDIERS]
Make it back alive to our homeland!

[ODYSSEUS]
Six hundred men
Six hundred miles of open sea
but the problems not the distance

[SOLDIERS]
Its what lies in between!

[ODYSSEUS, SOLDIERS]
And Ithaca's waiting! Ithaca's waiting!
My kingdom is waiting! The kingdom is waiting!
Penelope's waiting Waiting!
For me! For me!
So Full Speed Ahead!
Full Speed Ahead!

[EURYLOCHUS, SOLDIERS]
Six hundred men! Six hundred men!
We're tired, weary and fatigued from war war
We're broken and old like the bones in our bodies
Six hundred men! Six hundred men!
Who knows how long he can keep them in line
Its just a matter of time before someone tries to end your...

[ODYSSEUS, SOLDIERS]
And I cannot falter Better not falter
gotta keep my head low gotta keep our head low
then I'll evade the burns and make the journey home
So full speed ahead! Full speed ahead!
We're up, we're off and away we go
We're up, we're off and away we go

[ATHENA]
And so begins the glorious tale historians hail
about a more notorious male
This story entails failures and gory entrails
and mortals who sail around to hell and back to prevail!

I'll unveil what I know right off the top of my head
most of these sorry souls are gonna end up dead!
So as you hold onto the mast, I must ask
Are you prepared?
Cause here, every corner is a warning to beware!

[ODYSSEUS, SOLDIERS]
Waiting! My kingdom is waiting! My family's waiting for me!
And I know I cannot faulter, and I know I can't slow down!
Even though the gods are watching me to see if I will drown
So full speed ahead! Full speed ahead!Full speed ahead!
We're up, we're off and away we go
We're up, we're off and away we go
Full speed ahead!
We're up, we're off and away we go
We're up, we're off and away we go
We're up, we're off and away we go
Full Speed Ahead!

Warrior Of The Mind (The Boy and the Boar)[]

An early draft of Warrior Of The Mind that included a rap during the conversation between young Odysseus and Athena[51]

[ODYSSEUS]
Show yourself!
I know you're watching me, show yourself!
I can see you

[ATHENA]
How can you see through my spell?

[ODYSSEUS]
Aha! I was lying! And you fell for my bluff!
Hahaha!

[ATHENA]
You're no ordinary young man.

[ODYSSEUS]
Cause ordinary is boring, damn!

[ATHENA]
What is your name?

[ODYSSEUS]
You don't need to know my name. You know I play the game

[ATHENA]
Good answer. Never reveal your name if you don't have to
I would not reveal mine

[ODYSSEUS]
Quit lying. Don't be modest. I know you're a goddess
So lets be honest. You are Athena!
Badass in the arena!
Unmatched, witty and queen of the best strategies we've see

[ATHENA]
You've got no credentials but lots of potential
If you stick with me then I'll teach you the essentials

[ODYSSEUS]
Sounds like a plan! Goddess and man!
Bestest of friends!

[ATHENA]
We'll see where it ends.
[ODYSSEUS]
Okay

[BOTH, ATHENA]
Maybe one day they'll follow me and we'll
make a greater tomorrow. Then they'll see.
I know we'll change the world cause we are
the warriors of the mind!

Maybe one day we'll reach them and
we can build their skills as we teach them
If there's a problem, we'll have the answers
We are the warriors of the mind!

My Goodbye[]

A demo version of My Goodbye, which was originally a reprise of Warrior Of The Mind.[52] [53]

[ATHENA]
Goddess of Wisdom
Master of War
You'd think that they'd listen
But they're always so sure

They ask for directions
Then throw us off course
They beg for lessons
Then disregard the source

I calm their anger
Navigate their rage
But faced with danger
Wisdom only comes with age

Maybe one day they'll follow me
And we'll make a greater tomorrow
Then they'll see I thought I was the answer
If not then this is my goodbye

[ATHENA & ENSEMBLE]
I can't stand by and watch you tear down
The walls of all I have taught you
Until now I thought I was the answer
If not then

[ATHENA]
This is my goodbye

[ENSEMBLE]
This is my goodbye

[ATHENA]
This is my goodbye

Luck Runs Out[]

A scrapped part of Luck Runs Out where Poseidon reveals himself to Eurylochus and convinces him to open Aeolus' wind bag. This part was scrapped because it made no narrative sense due to the wind bag not being introduced yet, and Jorge wanting to portray Poseidon as more of a threat.[54][55]

[ODYSSEUS]
Now let me depart with some peace of mind

[EURYLOCHUS & SOLDIERS]
How much longer till your luck runs out
How much longer till the show goes south
How much longer till we all fall down
You rely on wit and people die on it
Woah

[EURYLOCHUS, spoken]
What is this?

[POSEIDON]
An offer that can't be refused
A chance you can't lose
Declining aligns you with certain doom

[EURYLOCHUS]
Who are you?

[POSEIDON]
You'll know when you're ready
An offer, take orders from me
You'll do the right thing
and keep those you love right under your wing

[EURYLOCHUS]
Why choose me?

[POSEIDON]
Wouldn't you like to be king?

Puppeteer[]

Before Wouldn't You Like was written, Hermes originally only made a small cameo in the middle of Puppeteer. In this snippet, he was characterized as very quirky and nerdy, but when Jorge started writing Dangerous, his personality changed into the Hermes that we know today.[56]

[HERMES]
Pretty nice speech you gave,
but how do you plan to save your men?

[ODYSSEUS, spoken]
Who goes there?

[HERMES]
Someone who wants to be your friend!
A foe like Circe is not to be messed with.
You want to beat her? You'll need the blessing
of a certain god...
Divine intervention!
Someone who's not afraid to...
send a message!

[ENSEMBLE]
HERMES!

[HERMES]
Take this root!

The Underworld[]

The Underworld originally featured a section where Odysseus learns of Elpenor's demise on Circe's island. Elpenor's death is still referenced in the final version of the song, since there is a loss of one man between Ruthlessness ("43 left under your command") and The Underworld.("558 men who died under your command") Odysseus left Ithaca with 600 men, so therefore he would have 42 men left, however it is never directly mentioned.[57]

[FALLEN SOLDIERS]
Elpenor!

[ELPENOR]
I died, and nobody noticed
I died, and nobody cared

[ODYSSEUS]
Elpenor, how did this happen?
When did you meet your despair?

[ELPENOR]
I drank wine from a chalice
on top of Circe's palace
and fell and broke my neck in shame.
But what do you care?
So many deaths happen under your reign

We'll Be Fine[]

An early draft for Telemachus' verse in We'll Be Fine, when it was originally planned for him and Athena to travel to the Island of the Lotus Eaters.[58] [55]

[TELEMACUS]
I don't know who this friend is
Or if he's worth the hype but
By time with you has been splendid
The best day of my life
Cause I got in a fight, sailed to an island
When I've never left home shores
You're the friend I've never had before

Odysseus[]

While Jorge was rewriting the lyrics of Odysseus, he shared these scrapped verses that he thought was funny due to misinterpretation.[59]

[TELEMACUS]
Throw down your weapons
And I ensure you'll be spared...

[MELANTHIUS]
We have seen what the king will do to those
with their hands in the air!
