We can still defeat the king if we all attack the prince!

—Melanthius (Odysseus)

Melanthius is one of the 108 suitors of Penelope in EPIC: The Musical.

History[]

Melanthius was a nobleman who became one of the suitors of Penelope in an attempt to become the new king of Ithaca. When Odysseus arrived home, the king hunted him and the rest of the suitors. Melanthius then found the armory with Amphinomus before Telemachus killed Amphinomus. This caused Melanthius to alert the rest of the suitors and of the open armory and to capture the prince. A battle happens between Telemachus and the suitors, with the brave prince fending most of them off and killing a few. However, Melanthius catches Telemachus off guard and wins the fight. He is swiftly stabbed in the back by Odysseus and asks the king for mercy. As Odysseus explains how mercy is no longer an option, Melanthius tries to crawl away, but the king finishes the job by repeatedly stabbing him. Odysseus then decapitates his corpse to demonstrate what will happen to those who have wronged him.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Odyssey, Melanthius was Odysseus’ disloyal goatherd, often providing food for the suitors and doing anything they asked him to. He was favored by many of the suitors, but Eurymachus was said to like him best of all.
  • His death in the source material was also much more brutal, having his nose and ears cut off and then being castrated by two of Odysseus' loyal servants.
  • In the song Odysseus, after alerting the other suitors of the armory, Melanthius seemed to become the new leader of the group before Odysseus killed him.
