Plot[]

Guided by Circe's instructions, Odysseus and his crew travel to the Underworld in search of Tiresias, the blind prophet. Odysseus orders his crew to not stop until they find Tiresias, no matter who they find along the way. As they sail through the Underworld, the crew is tormented by the wails of the dead. Odysseus has visions of his fallen crewmates, who are angry at him for sparing Polyphemus, leading to their deaths at the hands of Poseidon. He then finds Polites, recounting his philosophy of open arms. Lastly, Odysseus sees his mother, who unfortunately died waiting for him to come home.

When Odysseus finally finds Tiresias, the latter delivers the news that he is unable to help him. Tiresias begins to have horrifying visions of the future, which he delivers in the form of cryptic messages. The most haunting of the visions being Odysseus's palace in Ithaca covered in blood and a mysterious man being with Penelope.

After Tiresias delivers his prophecy, Odysseus begins to question his own morality due to his choices putting his crew in danger multiple times. He thinks about Polyphemus, who killed Odysseus' best friend to avenge his favorite sheep; Circe, who turned his men into pigs to protect her nymphs; Poseidon, who killed most of Odysseus' crew in order to avenge his son and protect his image; and himself, who killed countless Trojans to protect his kingdom. After reflecting on the conflicting philosophies of Polites and Poseidon, Odysseus realizes that the only way that he'll be able to make it home is to embrace his ruthlessness.

Trivia[]
